A pioneer, The Lord Duke of Buccleuch

The quarantine which started in Great Britain in 1935 stopped the importation and in consequence the first English breeders had to start working in spite of the difficult conditions they had.  A man set the path for the beginning of the Labrador in English land. This man was Walter Francis Montegu Douglas Scott, the fifth duke of Buccleuch.

In the precious  breeding books, that this passionate man constantly updated, his first dogs were described as it was the case of Lord Malmesbury Sep and Juno.

Quickly the popularity of the Labrador as a Retriever expanded to several counties. It became a solid competitor of the Setters and the Pointers, which were the main hunters at that time.

One of the great pioneers regarding the selection of the breed was undoubtedly Sir Holland Hibbert, better known as the Viscount of Knutford, who founded an important breeding house at the beginning of 1880.

One of the breedings which was considered outstanding in the field-trial was the male Munden Single, a black Labrador which was son of Munden Sixty by Munden Scotty.

On the 7th July 1903, after hard work and the selection of the first litter of the breed, which needed more than half a century of  detailed account and codified work, the amateurs obtained the acknowledgement of the Kennel Club that accepted the breed. Called Labrador, our dear Retriever, entered the world of British dog-lovers and appeared in the nomenclature of the hunting breed of dogs.

It is also necessary to mention that one of the descendents of Walter Francis Montagu Douglas Scott, the current Duke of Buccleuch was the founder of The Labrador Club in Scotland in 1941.

Buccleuch's selection was acknowledged by breeder historians as the origins of the main current lineages. Although, no dog with this affix was outstanding in the most prestigious canine expositions like the Crufts and they just did well in the field.trials, the affix is considered as the origin of the first lines of the breed and the first official selections. The number of affixes grew quickly be between 1910 and 1920, in fact the number of births multiplied.
